Congratulations, you've decided to invest in a one-of-a-kind portrait of a special home or pet! When you book me, the first thing we do is discuss dates. Generally speaking, I work as quickly as I can around parenting a small child, teaching classes, and previously scheduled projects. If you have a specific date of completion in mind, this is the first thing I need to know. Once we've established that I can complete your painting in time for your needs, you pay a 50% deposit. Payment is accepted via check, cash, or Paypal with a 3% fee. Payment schedules are always an option.
In order to begin work on your portrait, I need a high quality photograph. Digital is best but I can work from a physical copy, too. Pets need to be self supported (lying on a couch is fine) unless you have ordered a full detailed background; otherwise they look unnatural. I need a reference photo for all visible parts of the pet or home- if it's from a second photo, that's okay but you'll have the best product if I don't have to "make up" what your pet's entire lower half looks like. If all you have is a face, we can make it work, but know going in that it is going to be a portrait of just their face.
Once I scan or load the photograph, I use Procreate on my iPad to sketch out the proportions and major lines. I used to eyeball it all, using a ruler and the grid method to measure and recreate every ratio, drawing and erasing as many times as needed to get it right. That took a LOT of time! Using technology to hammer out the really important lines leaves more time and mental energy to nail the colors, highlights, shadows, and unique features.
From this point, I spend as many painting sessions as I deem necessary until it "looks right." Watercolor is best applied in lots and lots of light layers, or washes. It's a lengthy process! It's also a tough balance to find time during the day to take advantage of natural light without the Florida sun coming through my window becoming too harsh. I'll send you pictures throughout the whole process so that your feedback is noted and incorporated every step of the way.
Once I've completed the painting, I photograph or scan it so that we have a digital copy in case you'd like to reproduce it in any way. Paintings come to you unframed, with a small margin on the edges for trimming. I LOVE receiving photos from satisfied customers to share on social media- my favorite is a capture of your artwork in the same frame as your pet or home. I look forward to answering any questions you may have and even more so to working together!
